When following a weight loss plan, success is dependent not only on your behavior, but also on your attitude is what says Healthcare Business Today. Without the proper mental focus, your chances of success are significantly decreased. At the beginning of a program, when things are new and exciting, it can be easier to stay on track. But as time goes on, choosing to adopt certain habits will make or break your continued success.
#1 Set a Goal
While this seems an obvious tip for success in any venture, it’s an absolutely crucial aspect of starting a weight loss program. Goals will carry you through when motivation is low.
#2 Have a REASON for your goal
This is a less common piece of advice, but is every bit as important as setting the goal itself. While setting a goal, such as, “I want to lose 10 lbs” is a start, if you don’t have a REASON for wanting to lose that 10 lbs, it will not be enough when you’re going through a tough time and motivation is low. Having a reason, such as an event, a health scare, a trip, will make your goal far more important to you, and therefore much easier to stay committed to.
#3 Accept That Sometimes You WILL Be Hungry
Often these days diet programs and trainers will claim that you should never feel hungry or deprived when you’re losing weight. That’s absolute nonsense, and sending people into a plan thinking that they won’t occasionally struggle with hunger is setting them up for failure and feelings of frustration. Losing weight requires a caloric deficit, so that you will burn body fat as fuel, rather than food. When your body is using its own stored fuel for energy, certain physical responses take place that create what most people call “hunger pangs.” Accepting that you will occasionally be hungry will allow you to find ways to cope with it, as opposed to feeling upset because you were reassured that you should never feel hungry. Focus on the idea that it has a purpose, and that while losing weight is not always fun, when done in a healthy manner, it is completely worth it.
#4 Avoid Trigger Foods
While having the occasional treat is absolutely fine, most people have certain foods that set off cravings and cause them to go completely off track. For some people it’s snacky foods, for others it sweets. Either way, keeping them out of the house and avoiding them entirely will save you a lot of frustration when you feel you can’t control yourself. Not everyone has these foods, but if you do, don’t be ashamed. Identify the issue, and know that it’s in your best interest to keep them out of your diet and out of sight.
#5 Always Have Food Prepped And On Hand
Having your meals prepared ahead of time, and keeping quick and easy on-plan options available, significantly decreases your chances of reaching for calorie-dense off-plan foods. Being too busy to prepare food is a very common excuse for deviating from a nutrition program. Becoming overly hungry and having to wait for food to cook or take the time to make something can put you at risk of making poor choices. Save yourself from making a mistake, and be proactive by having your meals ready, and healthy snack options on hand.
#6 Go To Bed
You know that moment when you’re sitting on the couch, obsessing about whether or not you’re hungry, whether or not you should go explore the cupboards and see what there is to snack on…even though you know you shouldn’t….even though there’s a part of you that REALLY doesn’t want to sabotage your whole day of eating on plan? Save yourself a big mistake, accept that you’re just tired and making poor decisions, and GO TO BED!!!!
